THE BLACK JACOBINS; TOUSSAINT L OUVERTURE AND THE SAN DOMINGO REOLUTION 1.0 INTRODUCTION Who was Cyril Lionel Robert James? Cyril Lionel Robert James was born on the 4th of January 1901. He was an Afro-Trinidadian writer, journalist and socialist theorist. Cyril was so influential in the United Kingdom as well as the United States in the socialist parties together with the Marxist idea or thought, and also leading thoughts concerning the end of the colonialism. He was born in Trinidad and Tobago, which by then was a British Crown colony, Cyril attended the Queen's Royal College in the Port of Spain before he become a cricket commentator, as well as also a writer of literature. His form of historiography represents that while he embraces a Marxist the approach in the examination of the social class in the rebellion he can also drift from this to examine the individual characters of the rebellion, like Toussaint L’ouverature. Cyril’s focus on, and handling of, Toussaint is appealing because by focusing on the individual Cyril is drifting away from the communist ideologies. This demonstrates the importance of Cyril’s form of historiography as it does not restrict him but allows him to approve ambiguous ideas.
