It is even believed to have been used before cave paintings. It represents many different things, it mostly used for celebration, hunting rituals and to strike fear into the enemy. We see all of these within the novel such as the dance the tribe perform after their kills which become more savage as the paint spreads and the fear that produces within the boys after all; this is what causes Simon’s death on pages 187-190
