The Germans failed in their objective to defeat France in weeks and the Allies failed to force German out of Northern France and Belgium as the armies were too evenly matched in the new concept of trench warfare. In this type of defensive war, inexperience prevailed and through trench warfare and futile set-piece battles, the stalemate dragged on until the end of the war by which stage it had still not broken.
